It is a tool used for navigation and orientation in the world.

It shows 4 cardinal directions – North, South, East and West, it is usually called a compass rose.

First evidence of compass dates to 2nd century BC in China. It wasn’t, at first, used for navigation purposes but for geomancy and fortune telling. Later, duting the Song Dynasty in the 11th century was compass improved for navigating.
